March 2021

So, you’ve built an amazing website for your business, and you’ve spent countless hours making sure it looks right. You’re thrilled with how it looks and feels. But there’s one major problem. Your website isn’t coming up on Google. You’re frustrated because no one can find your business, and as a result, you’re not getting any leads or sales.

Here are some common reasons why your website isn’t ranking in Google.

1. You’ve got a new domain and only just launched your website.

It takes time for Google to discover new websites, so it could simply be that Google hasn’t found your website yet. To speed up the discovery process, the best thing to do is to create a sitemap and submit it through Google Search Console. This tells Google which pages are most important on your site and where to find them. Here at Evolution Design, we actively do this as part of our go-live process for our clients.

2. You aren’t using Google My Business.

Google likes to prioritise businesses that use Google My Business because it’s a simple and easy way for potential customers to find your business. It also helps Google find and deliver relevant results to the user. Setting up an account is easy, visit the Google My Business page and follow the prompts. We’ve helped many businesses set up their Google My Business page and we’ve seen outstanding results! If you need help setting up your account, our team are here to help guide you through the process.

3. Your website content isn’t optimised.

Having a well-designed website is one thing, but it must have high-quality content. Google’s Keyword Planner is a great tool to gain insights into which keywords users are actively searching for. You can then naturally incorporate these keywords into your content to improve your ranking on the results page. However, be careful as Google actively penalises sites that engage in “keyword stuffing” – the act of using too many keywords in the page content.

4. Your site speed is too slow.

It’s 2021, and attention spans are short! That means your website needs to load quickly to keep users happy and encourage them to stay on your site. Unfortunately, if your website is too slow, Google won’t rank it as high in the organic search results. To check your site speed, use Google’s PageSpeed Insights tool. It will also provide you with recommendations on how to correct these issues. If this sounds a bit technical, we’re happy to help!

5. Your website isn’t optimised for mobile devices.

More and more people are using their mobile devices to search online, so having a mobile-friendly website has become essential. Google knows this, and since they want to provide users with the best possible experience, they prioritise mobile-friendly websites in the organic rankings. Your website should have a responsive design, which means the site should automatically reconfigure itself for the device it’s viewed on. To check if your website is mobile-friendly, use Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test tool. All websites designed by Evolution Design are mobile-friendly and regularly tested.

6. Not enough high-quality backlinks.

Backlinks are an important aspect of your website ranking. So, when another website links to your page, it demonstrates to Google that your website is relevant and popular. Remember, Google prioritises quality over quantity, so ensure your links are clearly relevant to your website and provide value to those that click. When was the last time you cleaned up your backlinks? As part of our optimisation services here at Evolution Design, we conduct monthly backlink audits for our clients and clean up any unwanted, unprofessional backlinks.

7. Your meta and title tags aren’t optimised.

Search engines use your meta tags on every page of your website to work out what your content is all about. Meta tags are usually the first thing people see when people are searching for information. So, people will read this before deciding to click through your site. Title tags are just as important, and you need to make sure you include keywords to help improve your search rankings.
