What are your keywords? These are words prospective visitors will type into Google to find you.

When putting together your website content you want to use keywords effectively to encourage visitors to find you and visit your website. Knowing what they are can be challenging.

Many of our clients clamp up or get instantly stressed when we mention SEO or keywords so we thought we would put together four simple methods you can use to choose what keywords you would like to be ranking under.

Of course we can provide you with a report on what your businesses most effective keywords are, but if you’d like to do it yourself here are 4 top ways of doing it…

The first method is super quick and the others take a bit more time but provide more information.

  1. Use Google.
That’s right, ordinary old Google.com.au will give you a great idea of what people are searching for. Think about when you are typing a phrase into the Google search box. Google provides you with a list of suggestions about what they think you are looking for. These “suggestions” are based on the top searches relating to certain words. By searching for keywords you think people are looking for, you will get a further list of suggestions that they are really looking for. You can also look at the bottom of the page where Google offers up other suggestions of what you could search for to find more information. This method is a great start and will give you a great basis to use in the next method.
  2. Keyword Planner
The Keyword Planner is available free within any Google Adwords account. If you don’t have a Google AdWords account you can easily start one up. The keyword planner is found under tools, keyword planner. From here you can add keywords you think you might use and see their search volume, additional keyword ideas, competition levels and cost per click. This information is based on Adwords campaigns but is a great indication on what is happening with organic search too. The keywords you are looking for are ones with a high search volume but low competition levels. This is where you will get the best results when starting out. For us ranking for Website designer in Australia is much harder than Website designer in Geelong.
  3. Search Query Report.
This tool is only available within existing Adwords accounts. If you have an AdWords campaign you can find this tool within an ad group, campaign, search query. This will give you the information around what people are actually typing into Google as well as negative terms. The purpose of this is to allow you to improve your campaigns but you can use it for your organic results too.
  4. Competitor Research.
The final opportunity is to assess the keywords you competitors are using and the AdWords campaigns they are using. A tool such as SEMrush allows you to enter either keywords or your competitors domain. The results you will be given will tell you if your competitor is running an AdWords campaigns and if so what keywords they are bidding on and how much they are spending. Again you can shape some of your decisions around this.

All the methods above are completely free with the exception of having to have an AdWords campaign to use number three. They are all easy to do and will give you all the information you need to make some decisions around the keywords you want to start targeting within your digital media.
